§Web 1.0, Personal Websites, and Reflecting on My Own Online Presence
Published on
When I was a kid, I remember going to my local cyber-café (in a small town(opens in new tab) of fewer than 5,000 people) to download Dragon Ball pictures and save them onto a 3½-inch floppy disk so I could view them later on my home computer.
At that time, browsing the web felt like an adventure: chaotic, confusing, and exciting. Everyone was just doing their own thing: sharing their favorite movies or books, uploading pictures of their pets, creating crazy GIFs, and trying to figure out how this “World Wide Web” was meant to be used.
A few years later, I decided to join them. I built a website where my friends and I uploaded random photos, songs from our (terrible) band, and some stories and poems I wrote. It even had a state-of-the-art guestbook!
As I reflect on those days, I can’t help feeling that something special was lost along the way[1][2][3]. This website is my attempt to recapture some of that spirit.
